Six Month Stats
April 3, 2012
Crews had his six month well visit yesterday morning. He now weighs 17 pounds 5.5 ounces (49%). They measured him to be 25 3/4 inches (25%) which is shorter than he was measured the other week at the GI doctor, but he is somewhere around that length. Crews charmed the nurse and doctor as always, and held it together until the three shots in his thighs and then couldn’t help but cry. Ford is on spring break and came along with us and was so well-behaved during the appointment. I was proud of both of my boys.
Dr. Greenhouse gave us the green light for fruits, veggies and even meats with Crews. She also reminded me that “sleeping through the night” for his age is a 5-6 hours stretch, which is what he is doing. So although he is getting up two times after going to bed at 7:00, he is technically “sleeping through the night,” just not my night. Always good for me to hear her tell me these things as most people ask me “is he sleeping through the night for you yet?” And when I tell them he still gets up to eat I usually get reactions of surprise. But, I also know he is eating when he gets up and isn’t doing it just for comfort or to fall back asleep. I also know that Ford did the same thing, and eventually, eventually, he will go from 7pm to 7am without needing to eat.
When I asked about trying to get him to take naps in his crib rather than his swing she suggested we try it all at once. I was thinking that was what she was going to say as last week it was almost if Crews would cry and cry, knowing that eventually he would get to go in his swing where he wanted to be. So, today is the first day of no swing. I know eventually he will get it and like being in his bed for naptime. Eventually.
Overall, the appointment went well and Crews is developing as he should which is such a blessing. I feel like he has really changed a bunch this month and it has been so fun to see him grow and learn and become even more of a “big boy.”
On Saturday during dinner Crews sat in his high chair for the first time. I think Crews liked being up with the rest of us in his high chair during dinner rather than in his bouncy seat on the floor. We were having avacado with our dinner so I actually mashed some up for Crews. He ate it and liked it. He still likes his oatmeal, but I think he will like having other real food as well. He has had avacado since and will try maybe carrots next.
Here are some pictures from March I haven’t posted yet of the happy Bear.

6 Months Old!
March 28, 2012
Today Crews turned six months old. From today on he will be closer to one than to being a “newborn!” He is such a blessing and such a loving, happy, joyful, fun baby. We are all in love with him and adore him. He has continued to change and learn so much and we are thankful for all of it.
At the beginning of March Crews started becoming very interested in patterns. He studies any pattern on his burp clothes, blankets, my shirt, on the glider in his room etc. He also tries to “grab” at the pattern and concentrates intently as he tries to “rake” the pattern to him.
Crews now rolls from his back to his tummy with ease! The first time he rolled from his back to his tummy happened sometime in the middle of the night on March 3. I found Crews on his tummy when I went to get him to feed him in the middle of the night! I placed him on his back after he ate, but when he woke up the next time he was again on his tummy. I think almost every time since then (minus a few maybe) I find him on his tummy. The first time he showed me how he could roll from his back to his tummy was on Friday March 9 while we were playing in the family room. Since then he has been rolling a lot. And today I saw him on his tummy playing, walked out of the room for a minute, and when I walked back in he was on his back! He has “forgotten” how to roll from his tummy to his back, but maybe it’s coming back!
First time to sleep 11 plus hours… March 6. Although Crews had trouble falling asleep that night (he fell asleep eating, woke up 45 minutes later to eat more, and eventually had to fall asleep in Jeff’s arms) he slept until 6:40 am! I would love to say this has been the norm, but it hasn’t. He still usually gets up twice in the night after he goes to bed at 7. One day I know we will get there, but just not yet.
He still takes three naps a day. This week he has started taking his morning nap in his crib and it has been getting better each day (with less fussing and crying before falling asleep), although being in his crib has shortened this nap so far. He is still sleeping in his swing for his afternoon naps and I will soon transition him to the crib for the other two naps (and am keeping my fingers crossed they will eventually lengthen to the same length as they are in the swing). He has started napping with his Hippo lovey and still falls asleep sucking on his Pass.
Crews still eats 6 times a day, same schedule as he has been on. He now gets oatmeal after he nurses around breakfast time and then again at lunch time. He seems to prefer it over rice cereal so he has just been getting oatmeal lately. He loves it and opens his mouth and sometimes likes to help me put the spoon in his mouth. He also really watches us as we eat. The boy is definitely ready for other baby food. His 6 month well-visit is on Monday and I am pretty sure we will get the green light to move forward (finally) with baby fruits and veggies.
Crews has continued to be very vocal. For awhile it seemed like we were hearing only vowels for the most part, but lately he has brought back his consonant sounds and has a lot to say. A lot. And we love it. At night when Jeff gets home I am usually feeding Crews in his room. Crews will stop, listen for his Dada, and look towards the door in anticipation of his turn to say “hi.” When Jeff comes in to say “hi” Crews immediately will start talking to him. It is precious.
Some of Crews’ favorite toys are his “Jungle Tails” soft book, his “bug” bead ring, Sophie the giraffe, Mortimer the Moose, and jingle bell ball. He still likes his bouncy seat and loves his exersaucer.
He wears size 3 diapers and is in 6-9 month clothes. The cradle cap flakes on his head have finally gone (and with them some baby hair as well). His hair is growing back in and might even be a little lighter than his baby hair. He still has the darker hair on the bottom back and the swirl at the back top of his head that he has had all along.
Three weeks ago Ford, Crews, and I started attending a Music Together class on Tuesday afternoons. All three of us have really enjoyed it. With our registration for the session, which is ten weeks long, we received two CDs. We have been listening to the songs in the car some and at home. Both boys seems to like it and Crews is always so vocal after our class.
As of now Crews is not taking any medicine for his reflux. Taking Prevacid twice a day did eventually seem to help his terrible reflux symptoms. We went to the gastroenterologist a week ago on March 21. He weighed 16 pounds, 15 oz and was 26 1/4 inches long. We can definitely tell he is getting bigger and people have been commenting lately on this fact as well. In fact he is getting so heavy that I have recently started taking him in and out of his car seat and leaving the car seat in the car rather than taking him in the car seat in and out of the car (so heavy!). He will be weighed and have a length check at the pediatrician’s office on April 2 and we will get percentiles at that time. The appointment went well overall. The doctor felt we were treating the reflux appropriately and agreed that the symptoms did in fact sound like reflux rather than something else such as an allergy. He also shared that sometimes the liquid Prevacid (which is what we give Crews) can often lose its potency after two weeks. This was something I had never heard before and is something to definitely look out for if we have to give him the meds again. The doctor said we could go two routes. We could either keep Crews off the Prevacid (we had stopped giving him any three days prior to the appointment with the GI) and put him back on if symptoms started back, or we could put him back on the medicine until seven months and then take him off and see what happens. He recommended seven months as reflux typically peaks between 4-6 months and keeping him on till then would hopefully ensure that the worst was over. We decided to keep Crews off the Prevacid since he had already been off for three days. So far we haven’t put him back on the medicine, but know we may need to still. The amount of spit up has definitely increased, but the crying and arching while eating has not yet returned (and maybe we will get lucky and it won’t).
Crews loves, loves, loves the bath! He kicks so hard and splashes the water. He has also started sliding himself down in his tub so he is somewhat laying down. Such a silly boy. Crews has also started going in the baby swing at parks. I obviously don’t swing him high, but he smiles and laughs as he swings.
I still can’t get enough of his roly poly thighs! I love doing “thigh muncher buncher” and love that it makes him laugh. Crews now ”stands up” and does so every time I burp him during the day. It makes it quite challenging as he stands up on my legs/tummy and grabs at my face and hair and moves all around. He thinks he is big stuff when I stand him up and usually smiles big. He is still super ticklish on his side and back. He also really loves “This Little Piggy” and laughs hard during and even right before the “wee, wee, wee, all the way home” part. Crews will shrug his shoulders up and close his eyes and sometimes giggle in anticipation of me putting clothes over his head. He also still gets so excited when I put him on the rug in the bathroom to start getting him ready for his bath. He giggles when I swish my hair over his face. I love that we can all easily make Crews Bear laugh. He is such a happy baby.
Crews adores Ford. He loves when Ford comes in the room and his face truly lights up when he sees him. Crews also loves talking to Ford. He loves being in the crib or on the floor with Ford and “playing.” I think Ford is his favorite person.
I still love holding him after feeding him and just talking and looking into his gorgeous, big, blue eyes. I also love when I stroke his face and he puts his hand on my wrist and just rests it there. Holding this sweet baby of ours just feels great and is always a special time when he is still enough to be held.
We are in a great place right now and love having two boys. They both bring us such incredible joy and I am so thankful to be their Momma.
And now for some six month pictures taken today. The first batch in just his “jeans” diaper and then with some clothes. In both sets you will notice some pictures of Crews slumped down on the bed. Each time I would sit him up and he would almost immediately throw himself back to slump back down. Every time. Again, silly boy I love.

Back again
March 2, 2012
Well, we just couldn’t stay away, unfortunately. So, we headed back to see Dr. Greenhouse this morning for Crews. He has been crying, twisting back/arching, and kicking his legs every time he eats during the day. Every time. Monday night was rough with him getting up every hour or two and on Tuesday when he was still crying when I fed him I gave the doctor a call. She told me to start his Prevacid twice a day and to come in if it didn’t get better in 2-3 days. Unfortunately it has been 3 full days plus and he is still crying/fussing when he eats. Thankfully the nights have been better than Monday. So, we went to see Dr. Greenhouse, again. Crews now weighs 16 pounds, 4 oz! She said his weight gain is following his growth curve which is good to hear. She also said on the “outside” he looks “just great,” but that we definitely need to figure out what is causing him to cry as he eats. So the next step is a referral to the gastroenterologist. She said that hopefully we will be able to get in sometime over the next week or two. Also, two to three days prior to our visit she wants Crews off of the prevacid (a potential yikes!). So, that is our plan. Our Bear was as sweet as ever and Dr. Greenhouse loved pinching his sweet round cheeks. Hopefully if this doesn’t resolve on its own (there is still that chance right?), the gastroenterologist will be able to provide some answers and relief for our Peanut.

Stats: 4-year and 4-month
February 4, 2012
In the last couple of weeks both boys had well visits with Dr. Greenhouse.
Ford’s stats at his four-year well check up on 1/18/12 were:
weight: 34 lbs, 4 oz (35%)
height: 40 inches (42%) but I know he is actually taller than 40 inches. Ford was looking down when the nurse measured him and at his allergy appointment he was at least a quarter of an inch taller.
Ford had to get five shots at his visit and he was a champ! I had told him all along what to expect at the visit, including the shots. He asked multiple times if he could get a “flu mist” rather than the shots. Unfortunately, they don’t make vaccines in a “mist” form like the flu shot. Ford tried so hard to be brave and not to cry. I could tell he was really trying to hold back any type of crying. He didn’t scream and only whimpered by the last two. I was so very proud of him! He was definitely brave and could not wait to tell Jeff about how he did!
Crews’ stats at his four-month well check up on 2/1/12 were:
weight: 14 lbs, 14.6 oz (56%)
height: 24 inches (33%)
head: 42 cm (62%)
Dr. Greenhouse said that both his weight and length went down on the growth chart from his two-month visit, but to her it looked more like genetics and wasn’t too concerned about it. She also said that the 33% for height doesn’t mean he won’t jump up again. She said especially at this point it does not indicate how tall they eventually will be. Crews got the thumbs up in all areas and did a great job. Dr. Greenhouse was impressed that he was taking good naps and was not concerned that they were still in the swing (whew!). She was also impressed that he is going 8-9 hours at night and suggested I try again “waking” him for a feeding around 9 pm or so to see if he might shift his long stretch, switching the 9pm feeding with the 2/3:00 am feeding. I haven’t tried it yet but in the next week or so I will give it a go for a few nights and see what happens. She also advised against trying to get him to drop the 5:00 am feeding, or any feeding for that matter given the drop in his growth chart. She also gave us the go-ahead to start rice cereal! How is he old enough for food?! We waited until 6 months with Ford, but she said to go ahead and see how Crews does. Will try it soon and see what he thinks. Overall, it was a very good appointment. Crews had one oral vaccine which he did a fabulous job taking! Not one drop that he didn’t take! He then got two shots, one in each thigh. He barely fussed when the first one went in, but did start crying at the second. The nurse said she notices that the second one tends to bring more tears so figures it must sting more that the first. That afternoon he had a little fever and took a good afternoon nap. No whimpering or crying like after his two-month shots. Thursday he continued with a fever and in the afternoon/early evening it got to 102. With Tylenol it did go down and in the middle of the night it finally broke. The nurses had told me on the phone that if he still had a fever Friday morning I would need to bring him in. Thankfully, we didn’t have to do that. Crews kept his happy disposition throughout it all! We have another champ!
Two Months
November 30, 2011
Crews turned two months old on Monday. He saw Dr. Greenhouse for his two month well visit on Tuesday morning. He is now 12 lbs, 6.8 oz and 23 inches long. He is in the 80% for weight, length and head. A healthy boy all around. She suggested that in the next month we try to move him from sleeping in his swing (which is pretty much his “bed” now at night, rarely going in the nap nanny, and sometimes works for naps) to sleeping in his bed. I am pretty terrified to try this to be honest. I know it will mean fussing on his part and loss of sleep and I just am not up for it yet. Not sure what we will do or when, but definitely something I know we need to talk about and decide on. She also commented on how good his head control is and we definitely agree. He is a strong boy so far.
She wrote a new prescription for his Prevacid, still the same amount, but wrote for it to be compounded into a liquid form. I was able to fill it today at a pharmacy and gave Crews his first liquid dose which was so much easier than “dissolving” half of a pill. The tablets never truly dissolve and having to split it I never really knew how precise a dose he was getting or not getting since it crumbled so easily. I am thankful to now have his meds in an easy to give liquid which hopefully is more precise and consistent.
After his check up he unfortunately had to get shots. He took the one by mouth with such ease, but was not a happy boy when he was stuck in both of his thighs. Poor baby. The rest of the day he slept more than usual (on my chest or in my arms) and would whimper and cry when I would move him even the slightest bit. I gave him tylenol for the first time which helped some I think. Thankfully today he doesn’t seem bothered at all.
Seven nights ago Crews dropped a feeding. The one to go was the 11/12ish feeding. He now goes from eating around 8 or so until anywhere from 1-3 am. Having a longer stretch has been very nice, although it means he gets up usually two hours after his night feeding making up for the lost meal. He also is still getting up usually one other time fussy, but not to eat. If that time would go we would be doing pretty good on sleep. Maybe soon, let’s hope. So now he eats seven times a day. He continues to be a happy and very smiley baby that we are extremely grateful for.
I put Crews in his nap nanny Monday when he was sound asleep and within minutes he woke up and was as smiley as could be.

Saturdays are for…
October 15, 2011
soccer games and watching football. At least that’s what the Crane boys think. Today Ford had an 8:30 soccer game. It was a struggle to get there, but once there he had a blast as usual. My mom was kind enough to stay home with Crews and driving for the first time, I met Jeff at the fields not long after the game started to cheer on the Bean (Ford thought it was so great that I was able to drive). He had another “assist” in scoring a goal and ran just as hard as he always does. It was a gorgeous morning and so great to be able to be out there watching Ford.
After the game my mom and I ran an errand and picked up some lunch and when we came back the Gamecocks were just about to start playing. Ford and Jeff camped out in the family room to cheer them on. Ford told Jeff “I’m glad you are home to watch the game!” Usually Jeff is either at our stadium or on the road but was actually able to stay at home this weekend. Ford loved watching football with him. During the second half of the game Crews joined them and as you can see in the pictures, slept through the entire thing.

On a completely different note. We had to take Crews to the doctor again on Friday. The rash he had was worse on Friday morning despite the ointment I had been putting on it. Our doctor’s office was completely booked so we headed to one of their offices we have never been to. The doctor took a culture and prescribed an antiobiotic for Crews to take twice a day for ten days. If the results from the lab indicate that the infection is resistant to the type of antibiotic he has started then we will have to switch, but hopefully that will not be the case. The little Peanut is not a fan of taking medicine and along with the Zantac twice a day and Mylicon drops it is somewhat of a beat down having to give him the antibiotics as well (and of course the meds need to be spaced two hours apart from each other). At the appointment yesterday Crews weighed 9 lbs, 6 oz.
He still seems to struggle some with tummy/gas issues. My mom has been kind enough to help me out in the early mornings when he has trouble and can’t seem to get comfy enough to go back to sleep. She brings him downstairs and holds him on her chest which he loves. Too bad we know it is not safe to let him sleep on his tummy in his crib becuase I really think it might go a lot smoother. But, since it isn’t safe, we continue to try and get him to sleep in the “nap nanny” that at least is an incline to help somewhat, although he definitely would prefer to be held (just like Ford did). My mom left this afternoon and it was hard to say good-bye. She has been such an incredible source of help, care, love, generosity and support for us these last few weeks. I have serious doubts about how I will swing it all with out her. I know it will happen somehow, but know it definitely won’t be as smooth as it was with her here. We are so extremely grateful she was able to be with us for as long as she was, even though none of us were ready for her to leave. So tonight starts “real life” for us. Hopefully it won’t be too rough.
Two weeks
October 13, 2011
Yesterday marked two weeks that Crews has been in our family. Hard to believe and just like it has with Ford, in many ways time is going so quickly.
On Tuesday I had my (almost) two-week post-op appointment with Dr. Wild to check my incision. He said everything looks good so far and will continue to heal even better in the next four weeks before I go back again. I am able to take walks in the neighborhood as I feel up to it, but am not able to do much else. Am hoping that next week Crews and I can start a walking routine in the mornings once we drop Ford off at school. I have been “feeling” more lately, but I have also completely stopped all medications to help with any pain or discomfort. I was actually happy to be weighed this appointment and have lost over half the weight I gained. Still have a ways to go, but I was encouraged and Dr. Wild was very encouraging about it as well. Overall, it was a great appointment. I am still so thankful for the care that both Ashley and Dr. Wild have provided me.
On Wednesday morning Crews went for his two-week well check. Dr. Greenhouse did not have an opening so we saw Dr. Painter who I really liked as well. Crews now weighs 9 lbs, 3 oz! Again I was told what a great eater and weight-gainer he is. Dr. Painter said that typically for nursing babies they like them to be at their birth weight at their two-week appointment and our little Peanut is well above his birth weight! I had a few things to talk about with Dr. Painter and was glad the appointment came when it did. The first was the reflux symptoms I have been seeing. In the few days prior to the appointment I really noticed a lot of reflux behavior that we saw with Ford. Crews would cry in pain almost every time I fed him and for quite a while after. It was so sad. He would arch his back some while we held him trying to comfort him. He also starting spitting up every time I fed him. Our nights were hard and it just seemed like the little guy was very uncomfortable. Dr. Painter said we could start Zantac (.6 ml twice a day) and see how it helps. He reminded me that in a few weeks the fussiness may increase again, indicating a need to increase his dose to match his increase in weight gain that will occur. Last night Crews had his first dose and it did seem to help some. He had a better night and less crying out in pain (although some still). Crews also has a rash of some sort below his belly button and on his inside thighs and now has an ointment we put on three times a day to try and get it cleared. The third big thing we discussed was his belly button. It had been bleeding a little bit each day since Sunday. Dr. Painter said it wasn’t infected, but he did use silver nitrate to try and ”dry it up” and help it heal completely. I left feeling great and thankful to have had the appointment when we did to help our little guy. Our next regularly scheduled appointment won’t be until he is two months.

The kid cracks us up
April 6, 2010
Last night we had some friends join us for dinner. Ford always loves having friends come visit and last night was no different. He revs up and gets on “super mode” running around, showing off, and just being plain silly. When I was in the kitchen getting things ready Jeff called “Allison, come in here to see what your son is doing.” “Your son.” Hhmmm. You never know what you are about to see when that phrase is pulled out. When I walked into the family room there was Ford lounging in his red chair with the bag of chips that was part of the appetizer, leg crossed over his knee, not a care in the world, munching away while watching what they had on TV. We really should have taken a picture of him. It was too funny.
Earlier that day Ford and I were both in the kitchen. I was getting our things together to go meet our friend to walk. While I got his drink and snack ready Ford managed to take his shorts off, and one of his socks and shoes completely off. When I turned and saw him, now half undressed, he just grinned at me. My camera was on the counter and this is what I captured.
Check out his new tennis shoes his Grandad bought him this weekend (more on that soon)
Working to get the other shoe off
On a completely separate (and not funny) note. I ended up taking Ford to the doctor late yesterday afternoon. He woke up from a very short nap crying and told me his ear hurt. He had done this a couple of times during the weekend, but then would be his normal happy self, so I figured maybe his ear was just “plugged” and felt funny due to all the pollen. But, when he couldn’t sleep again today and said his ear hurt again, I decided it was worth paying the doctor to check it out. Luckily Dr. Bartlett could see him an hour later. She isn’t our usual doctor, but is in the same practice as Dr. Greenhouse. Ford was weighed and weighs 24.6 pounds. I asked the nurse to measure his length as well. He is now 36 inches which places him in the 69% for height. He is definitely long and lean at this point. In fact, we have lots of trouble keeping his pants up because of his small waist. He started amoxicillin tonight and will take it twice a day for 10 days. We can give him Benadryl and Tylenol to help him too. I am thankful we went in and am also amazed that we are now at the stage where our “baby” can tell us that something is wrong.
Stats and medals
January 21, 2010
Last Thursday January 14, Ford went for his two year well-visit with Dr. Greenhouse. Here are his stats:
Weight: 24.2 pounds, 9 %
Height: 35 1/4 inches, 71% (although I must admit I think this might be taller than he actually is)
Head: 49.5 cm, 71%
Ford has “graduated” to the big boy scale and no longer has to sit in one! Still not a fan though.
Dr. Greenhouse said that everything looks great and was impressed with his talking (he was quiet at first and by the end was sharing quite a bit with her). She mentioned that his bottom teeth are pretty close together which means we should start flossing. Really? Because I can barely remember to brush his teeth two times a day and rarely floss myself. But, we will try. His next well-visit isn’t until his 3rd birthday! But, because of his weight she asked for us to check back in four months. So, in May we will head back to see her and see what his weight looks like. Ford had a bit of blood drawn to check his iron levels and received one shot that was supposed to be given awhile back but was on a national shortage at the time. Ford did great and didn’t even really cry, got a band-aid, and we were on our way. He still mentions his band-aid and shot a week later.
After his well visit we headed to Little Gym for the “big show.” It was the last class of the semester which means visitors watching their little ones “perform” (really its just watching them run around having fun and occasionally doing a “trick” here or there). Jeff was able to come watch most of it and participate with us and Ford loved it. The end of class was by far Ford’s favorite part. As soon as Miss Emily brought the stairs out for the “podium” he was all about climbing them. In fact, Miss Emily asked Ford to go sit with me and he wouldn’t leave, so he was the first medal recipient! I wish we had his medal receiving on video because it was so funny. Ford looked so incredibly proud with his medal around his neck and just stood up there smiling away as the entire room smiled and laughed. We loved seeing his reaction and love that he has had the opportunity to go to Little Gym. Our next semester started today and he was as excited as always to run around and see his friends.
Doing a few tricks with his teacher’s help
18 month stats for my fun loving boy!
July 16, 2009
Ford had his 18 month well visit this morning with Dr. Greenhouse. When he got up I told him he was going to the doctor this morning and was telling him what would take place when he started saying “doctor, doctor.” He was excited until he went in the exam room of course. The crying (both real and fake) and drama soon started as he was weighed and measured. You can tell by his picture that he was not too thrilled to be weighed. He was quite the wiggle worm and they had to do his head and height measurements three times. Yes, three.

His stats are as follows:
weight: 23 pounds, 14th percentile
length: 32 inches, 38th percentile
head circumference: 48.5 cm, 50th percentile
I would love to say that Ford was better once Dr. Greenhouse came in, but that just isn’t how it went. She kept laughing at his dramatic reaction to anything she did or said and laughed at his fake cry/whine which he also demonstrated. The good news is that he continues to grow as she would like and everything looks good. He had to get 2 shots which he recovered from quickly and then we were on our way.
Once home, Ford was quite the silly boy. All full of smiles and was in a great mood. He had fun pushing his green machine, playing on the stairs, and playing in the kitchen some too. Yesterday for the first time he asked for a hug. It was the sweetest thing and he has done it again today. He walks up to me and says “hug” or “mom, hug” and reaches out to get a squeeze! I love it! Here are some pics from our morning at home together.

Ford took this pot out of the cabinet and then decided it would be fun to stand inside it.
